Avoiding Nursing Homes

The thought of death and disease may not be sufficient to motivate many of us into adopting a healthier lifestyle. But how do you feel about a life in the nursing home?
In a recent study a community of middle-aged (44-64 years old) and elderly persons (65-74 years old) were followed for 20 years to evaluate the association between their lifestyle and their risk for nursing home admission. The risk factors which were evaluated were smoking, inactivity, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes. The study concluded that all the factors except the total cholesterol in the middle aged persons increased the risk of nursing home admission. So in between the work, and the projects, and the errands allocate some time for exercise and for your health to improve your chances of staying independent longer.

I think there's a bit of a stigma attached to Nursing homes tbh. They're seen as a place where the elderly live out their final days blah, blah, blah. But given the current state of the country where tens of thousands of elderly people are living on the poverty line due to insufficient pensions i believe that nursing homes have a greater calling in society ie. a place where elderly people can live in safety and security with like minded people of the same generation. The facilities on offer in many nursing homes are better than a lot of pensioners could expect to afford in their own homes and modern nursing home furniture allows for nicer interiors.
