Folate Reduces Premature Births
A new study concludes that women who take folic acid (folate) for one year reduce their risk of giving birth to premature babies by 50 to 70 percent. The recommended dose is 400 micrograms per day. Since more than one half of women who become pregnant have not planned their pregnancies, it is recommended that all women of child-bearing age take this supplement.

Apparently, folic acid also help prevents against spina bifida in babies when growing in the womb. My pregnant friend found this out when her ultrasound showed severe spinabifida in her baby and her count for folic acid came back very low.
