Healthy Heart Numbers

The American Heart Association has published their new recommendations for healthy adults to help reduce the risk of heart disease. Are you meeting these goals?

Blood pressure: less than 120 systolic (the upper number), and less than 80 diastolic (the lower number).

Low densitly lipoprotein(LDL), known as bad cholesterol (think L for lousy) : less than 100 mg/dL.

High density lipoprotein (HDL), known as good cholesterol (think H for healthy) : more than 40mg/dL in men, and more than 50 mg/dL in women.

Triglycerides: less than 150 mg/dl.

Glucose (sugar) level during a fasting state in the blood: less than 100 mg/dL.

Body mass index: 18.5 -24.9 kg/m2. Use the BMI Calculator.

If you don't know your numbers, ask your doctor about a screening test.

Hi Taraneh, Good to see you back, sorry to hear about illness in the family. Hope it's all sorted now.

A question for you:

If someone has hypertension which is controlled by medication i.e. well within the specified ideal range, would it be correct to assume that it will not end in hypertension related complications so long as they take their medication? As if they never had this problem? Or is it a case of once you have this problem, regardless of how controlled it is, you will inevitably die a horrible death?

Hi Haleh

The short answer is that yes, as long as the blood pressure is in the ideal range even on medication, then many of the complications may be avoided.
It is the long term effect of the uncontrolled high pressure on many of the organ systemsthat creates the damage.

I have recently had all these tests and they are fortunately in the normal range except for the glucose level due to the fact that I have Diabetes.

This wasn't always the case as over the last couple years I have had complications. Since I am back on track and have developed an extremely friendly food regimen as I like to call it, things are on the way back to a much healtier lifestyle.

Thanks for reminding me of my recent progress.

Thanks for compiling this info - it would be interesting to have a chart about how these recommendations change with time.
